Good things come to...

"...those who wait."

I don't know about you, but people have been feeding me this lie since childhood. I'm sure it's intended to teach patience, but more often than not, I've found that it's more likely to teach complacency and laziness.

That's not to say I did some kind of scientific research or anything. What do I look like? An sociologist?! I'm just making an observation.

There's just something inherently wrong with that statement. Good things come to those who wait. So, what you're saying is: I should just sit here, do nothing, and wait for good things to happen to me?

No. As 2012 comes to a close (cliche, I know), I've been looking back on all the awesome things that have happened to me-no, that I've made happen for me-I'm more convinced that this whole, "good things come to those who wait" thing is wrong.

I'll be completely honest, I've never heard of a billionaire or a really successful person who sat on their ass, thought about it, hoped about it, prayed about it, and things just happened for them. They worked hard. They did what they had to do to find themselves in a successful place for good things to happen.

So I said all that to say this:

If you have a goal or a dream or a hope, get off your ass and make it happen. Praying that cheetos will make you skinny ain't cuttin' it, buster. If you want to get fit work out, eat right and take care of yourself. If you want to be successful, do what you have to do to make sure that you're successful in your field. If you want to be Nicki Minaj, save up a ton of money and find the best plastic surgeon you can find and a producer who loves auto tune! You get the point. Things don't happen TO people. Good things can't find you. But you can do your part to put yourself in a good position when opportunities come along.

2013 is just around the corner, but don't wait for January 1. Start that sh*t now. No time like the present.
